Experienced medical professional Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, MD currently holds positions as a professor and Vice Chairman of Clinical Research at Stony Brook Medicine. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero also specializes in clinical research, focusing on topics including quality improvement, surgical site infection, postoperative morbidity, and safety and effectiveness with blood transfusions. His research on blood transfusions spurred an interest in exercise performance, and he began competing in triathlons, completing three half ironman triathlons to date.

If you are considering competing in your first triathlon, here are a few tips to help you achieve the best result.

1. Be sure to set a special triathlon training plan as soon as you decide you want to participate in the event. You should try and plan for at least 12 weeks of training prior to competing. Incorporate rest days and resistance training into your swimming, running, and biking schedule.

2. Pick up some basic gear to use in the competition. You will need, at minimum, a good bicycle, a swim suit, goggles, and cap, cycling shorts, a water bottle, and some good running shoes.

3. Take some time to rehearse your transitions between running, biking, and swimming sets. It can be easy to get tripped up changing your clothes out and switching equipment, so it’s helpful to rehearse this during your training.
