A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero went on to complete an anesthesiology residency and critical care medicine fellowship at Duke University. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero now serves as a professor of anesthesiology and vice chairman for clinical research and innovation in the department of anesthesiology at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) recently awarded Stony Brook Heart Institute its top rating for outcomes and care of patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures. STS bases its ratings on data from the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, which records a variety of quality measures for cardiac procedures.

In evaluating hospitals, STS considers four outcomes: absence of mortality; absence of morbidity, which refers to complications; utilization of mammary arteries; and discharge with appropriate medications and instructions. The STS three-star rating, considered the gold standard by physicians, is given to only 10 to 15 percent of programs in the United States and Canada.
