In July 2018, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at Stony Brook Medicine was recognized by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) as maintaining the highest possible star rating for quality and outcomes. The benchmarked outcomes within the STS star-rating system span Canada and the United States, with only 10–15 percent of participants historically achieving the highest three-star rating.

With the STS rating focusing on coronary bypass surgery, it recognizes the coordinated efforts of approximately 300 team members at the Heart Institute. These include operating room respiratory support technicians, nurses, attending physicians, and anesthesia providers. The Institute is also networked with specialists region wide in areas such as pulmonology, neurology, endocrinology, and radiology.
