Stony Brook Medicine Unveils Long Island’s First Mobile Stroke Units

Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, MD, has published extensively as a physician and researcher, driven by a decades-long career in anesthesiology in a variety of capacities. For the past four years, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero has held the position of professor of anesthesiology at the Stony Brook University (SBU) School of Medicine, and also serves as the vice chair for clinical research and innovation within the department.
The school of medicine has joined forces with the Stony Brook Cerebrovascular and Comprehensive Stroke Center (CVCSC) to unveil two Mobile Stroke Units (MSUs) to be used across the area, which is a first for Long Island. Launched on April 8, the MSUs are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., which is when the majority of stroke-related calls are received.
The ambulances are specifically equipped to deal with the condition, and look to respond to calls in less than 20 minutes. The goal will be to provide a high level of care while transporting patients to the nearest treatment center, acting as a mobile emergency center for people who suffer from a stroke.
The MSUs are equipped with state of the art equipment, such as CT scanners and conferencing equipment that will allow medical professionals based in hospitals to assess patients during their transport.
